Scotland Cycle Repair Scheme

Welcome to Blair Atholl Bike Hire & Sales

We are delighted to be part of a new national service to help get thousands more people across Scotland on their bikes.

The COVID-19 crisis has hit many people hard, so we know it can be difficult to pay for essential bike repairs right now. The scheme has been created as part of the Scottish Government’s response to the COVID–19 pandemic and the need to provide more options to the public for travel and transport.

The Scottish Government and Cycling UK know that there are many more bikes than people who want to cycle at this time. This is partly due to mechanical problems or a lack of regular maintenance - so this scheme will help get those bikes fixed, safe and back in use.

The Scotland Cycle Repair Scheme supports bikes shops, mechanics and community projects providing cycle repairs across the country up to the value of £50 per person and is targeted at people who have a cycle but it needs some maintenance to get it back in use. By helping to minimise the costs of bike repairs we can breakdown barriers to cycling.

We will offer this service until 31 March 2021 or until our funding runs out. Under the scheme we will cover the first £50 of any eligible repair work carried out but any excess must be paid by the customer.

Step One – Book an Appointment

Contact us using the form below and we will book you in for an assessment of the work required to get your bike back on the road.

Due to current COVID restrictions we only operate the Scotland Cycle Repair Scheme on set days and all visits must be booked in advance.  Please do not arrive with your bike without an appointment as we will be unable to help.

The scheme is designed to reach as many people as possible with a limit of one cycle to be repaired per person. However, if a parent/guardian brings in individual bikes for their family, we are able to service them all.

Step Two – Assessment

We need to carry out an assessment of your cycle and if the total value of the work required is more than the £50 allocated by the scheme then we need your agreement in advance before starting work on it. Once we have completed the assessment we will prepare a short report outlining the work required and detailing any additional costs not covered by the scheme. This will include an itemised breakdown of all parts required, charges and labour. We will be in touch by phone or email with you to agree next steps.

We won’t do any work on your bike until you have confirmed that you are happy to proceed and if necessary pay for any additional parts and labour needed to get your bike back on the road.

Step Three – Repairs

Our Basic Bike Service is provided as part of the scheme and includes:

  • frame and forks wiped down and checked for alignment;

  • gears and brakes adjusted;

  • chain checked and lubricated;

  • wheels and tyres inspected for wear; and a

  • full safety check.

The cost of our Basic Bike Service is £40 leaving up to £10 per bike to allocate against the costs of any repairs that are necessary to make the cycle roadworthy and fit for purpose such as:

  • repairing or replacing tyres, tubes, wheels and related components;

  • adjusting, repairing or replacing braking system components;

  • adjusting, repairing or replacing transmission system components;

  • repairing or replacing other essential components which prevent safe use of the cycle - including deteriorated grips or saddle.

The following repairs/transactions are NOT covered by the scheme:

  • the sale of replacement parts without any repair work;

  • replacement or upgrade of existing safe and roadworthy components;

  • replacement or repair of removeable lighting accessories;

  • using the £50 to contribute to the purchase of cycles or accessories; and

  • any repairs to e-bike electronic units.

Step Four – Pick Up and Pay

When we have completed the work, we will be in touch to arrange a convenient time to pick up your bike. All appointments need to be arranged in advance to comply with current COVID restrictions. When you arrive we will give you the opportunity to test ride your cycle and retain any old parts we have replaced.  Once you are happy your bike will be released upon full payment of any outstanding monies due.
